Tips on identifying the dead laptop

Laptops are difficult to repair. Even if you can determine the problem, the part may be irreplaceable. Proprietary parts and expense are hurdles to repairing laptops. Unlike desktops, laptops do not have standardized interfaces and connectors for the hardware. Parts from one manufacturer are unlikely to work with in a laptop from another. However, if you can determine the faulty part in a dead computer, the manufacturer may be able to provide a replacement part at a lower cost than buying a new computer.

Instructions

  1. attempt to boot the laptop. Check all power and battery connections. It is possible the battery cannot hold a charge and the laptop will only work plugged in. If there are any beeps, write down how many and whether they were long or short. Computers beep error messages, called POST codes, which specify the failing part such as RAM or a hard disk. Consult the manufacturer to interpret the code. The codes are specific and should pinpoint which part is faulty.
  2. Watch the laptop for blinking lights or other indications of power. If the laptop screen is the faulty part, then the computer will turn on but the screen will remain dark. If no lights appear, the issue is either the power connector, which may have come loose over time, or within the main system board.
  3. Find another AC adapter and battery for your laptop to test if you can. A local tech shop may be able to do this for a small fee. Both parts can wear out. If the laptop still does not turn on, then the problem is the system board.
  4. Contact your manufacturer and ask about a replacement system board. System boards for laptops are expensive and not easy to replace. You may have to pay for labor, but it is possible to replace one yourself. Other parts suppliers or a used but working laptop of the same model are cheaper sources for the board.

Warnings

The main board in laptops integrates many features into a small area. Because laptops run hotter than comparable desktop computers, they will burn out or fail sooner. You can mitigate the risk of your laptop dying by keeping it well ventilated during heavy use. Leaving a laptop running on insulating surfaces, such as beds, will retain more heat than running it on a table or desk.
